More ransomware attacks

I hope everyone is running the full version of Malware Bytes.

Another ransomware attack “Bad Rabbit” is making it’s way through Ukrane and Russia, this time via an infected flash player installer loaded onto legitimate news websites that had been hacked.  This marks the 3rd major outbreak this year after the Wanacry and NotPetya attacks and there’s no indication they will stop any time soon.  In fact as the tools to create these attacks become more readily available and people are still willing to pay the ransom for their files it’s likely this is just the beginning.

As with all malware we can only recommend standard procedures to keep your business or home PCs safe from these infections.

  • Don’t let end users operate with local admin rights on a day to day basis.
  • Make sure everyone know the danger of opening .exe files especially from emails and unknown sources.
  • Keep Windows and applications up to date.
  • And of cause have the full version of Malware Bytes running in the background, in our experience it’s the fastest at identifying and catching these threats before they open.

For discounts on any version of Malware Bytes, give us a call and we will do you a quote.  Even if you have other antivirus software I would recommend at least downloading the free version onto your PCs just too see what it will catch.

Top 5 Recommended Windows Tools

Windows Tools and Applications

Here is an updated list of our top 5 Windows tools and applications

Malware Bytes LogoMalware Bytes

Malware Bytes has long been the standard for anti-malware on Windows PCs.  These days viruses in the traditional sense are much rarer then they used to be, however malware/adware/spyware still runs rampant, this is where Malware Bytes comes in.

The free version runs quick manual scans with one of the highest if not the highest detection rate on the market.  The paid for version runs constantly in the background checking all files/websites/attachments and is recommended for anyone wanting to spend money on IT security.

If you are going to use any of the Windows Tools on this list this is the one I would recommend the most, even if it’s just for a one time scan.

CCleaner is a cache cleaning utility that does just that and more.  As you use your PC more and more cache and other temporary files build up and slow your PC down.  We recommend the free version which removes unneeded files from over 30 locations on your PC.
